The owner of a Cape Town-based travel agency was found guilty on seven counts of theft in the Pretoria Commercial Crimes Court on Thursday.
Crescenda Meyer, 50, operated the agency called Style Breakaway Travel in Cape Town.
In 2018, seven Gauteng women and their husbands applied to the travel agency to manage their travel arrangements to Zanzibar.
“Meyer provided the group with schedules and invoices, and the group made the payments separately. Meyer took the money and borrowed it from her boyfriend,” the North Gauteng regional spokesperson for the Chief Prosecutor said in a statement Thursday. Public, Lumka Mahanjana. .
The seven women were whistleblowers in the case.
Without reservation
However, the group arrived at the airport for departure only to find that reservations were never made.
“The group reported the matter to the police and Meyer was arrested in Cape Town in June 2019,” Mahanjana added.
Meyer pleaded guilty to the robbery charges.
Prosecutor Patrick Tinyiko Nkuna said he was happy with the conviction as it would restore public trust.
Meyer is due to return to court on December 3 for sentencing.
