The Manchester United confirmed capture of Donny van de Beek shows how the Red Devils moved to capitalize amid the effects of the pandemic.
Van de Beek was primed for a summer signing by Spanish champions Real Madrid before the La Liga giants withdrew in June.
The Dutch newspaper Telegraaf reported that Real Madrid had set the wheels in motion to sign Van de Beek this summer.
Marca reported in March that the framework of an agreement was in place for this next transfer window, and had been since December.
But then when football crashed, Real fell back. He has been very cautious, and so far he has not made any new signings, the only squad improvement being the return of Martin Odegaard from the loan.
Real’s defeat is Manchester United’s gain, with the Red Devils moving decisively to sign Van de Beek over the weekend, BBC Sport reported.
Van de Beek joins a player Real Madrid were even more desperate to sign.
Pogba and Van de Beek together
The player that Real Madrid really wants is Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba.
Real followed him for a long time, with rumors linking the Frenchman to Madrid for the better part of two years.
The Mail reported as recently as April that Pogba remained a prime target for Zinedine Zidane.
Financially, a deal seems impossible for Real to strike, and Pogba seems very happy at Manchester United since returning from injury.
Pogba’s outspoken agent Mino Raiola even came out this summer and told Sky Sports that his client would stay.
Raiola said: “Pogba is staying at Manchester United and I think they want to extend his contract. He is at the center of an important project ”.
So Real’s loss is definitely United’s gain. Getting the Frenchman tied to that extended contract is important.
Van de Beek can help Pogba by replacing him and making sure he doesn’t overdo it, while he can play alongside him in a couple of different tactical systems.
What is clear is that United’s midfield is now of great quality, with players of the quality of Real Madrid.
We certainly couldn’t say that at times last season when injuries hit.
