  • The Black Business Council suspends its vice president, pending the outcome of the gender-based violence allegations in court.
  • BBC says this decision does not suggest blame on Keith Thabo’s part.
  • Thabo told News24 that he continues to hold the position and perform his duties.

The Black Business Council (BBC) has suspended one of its vice-presidents, Keith Thabo, on allegations of gender-based violence (GBV), pending the outcome of the matter in court.

“The decision was made after the BBC National Office Bearers learned that there was an open gender-based violence case against Keith Thabo,” the BBC said in a statement Thursday.

The council further adds that this decision does not suggest guilt on Thabo’s part, but is a precautionary measure “to give him space and time to deal with the accusations against him.”

“The BBC condemns all incidents of gender-based violence in the strongest possible terms.

“We call on law enforcement agencies to prosecute those involved in gender-based violence without fear or favor to heal our beloved country from this pandemic,” the council added in its statement.

The BBC stated that it was unequivocal in its stance against gender-based violence and femicide.

“Any form of violence is never acceptable, never excusable and never tolerable,” the BBC concluded.

When News24 contacted Thabo on Thursday, he said he had no comment on the matter, but that he remained vice chairman of the council.

“There is no suspension. In my opinion, I am still vice president, I will continue to hold my position and [perform] my duties. My personal affairs [have] nothing to do with advice, “he said.
