Four police captains within the Silverton Police have been arrested in connection with the fraudulent bidding for R56 million police vehicle marking.
The four officers who surrendered to police today appeared in Pretoria Magistrates Court along with another co-defendant, who also surrendered to police on Sunday after eluding arrest over the weekend.
The recent appearances bring the total number of defendants in the matter to 36, police officers, retired captains and management employees stationed at the Silverton supply chain post along with a few suppliers.
Another 15 of the co-defendants have already appeared on Monday and have been granted bail of 5,000 rand each.
All will face charges of fraud, money laundering, corruption and theft.
The recent arrests are part of three-year investigations by the National Prosecutor’s Office, which in June already witnessed the arrests of 16 senior officials from the South African Police Service.
The case relates to allegations of tampering with procurement documents for the brand of police vehicles, as well as the listing of written price quotes for South African police services.
The alleged incidents according to the Investigations Directorate occurred more than two hundred times between the period of April 2016 and 2019.
The quotes include contracts for the installation of palisade fencing, repair of state motor vehicles, landscaping services, forklift service and painting services, in the amount of R 29 million.
All of the defendants will reappear in Pretoria Magistrates Court on September 29.
