Venus and Clijsters fall as seeds advance at US Open

Venus williams and Kim clijsters withdrew from the US Open at the first hurdle on Tuesday as the seeded players dominated the women’s draw for the second day in a row.

Hours after her younger sister Serena had fought in the second round, the 40-year-old Venus was back in the limelight in what was an incredible 22nd appearance at the US Open.

But Williams, who reached the final of the US Open on her tournament debut in 1997, was defeated in the first round for the first time in her brilliant career by Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic.

Muchova, the 20th seed, had too much poise for Williams en route to a 6-3, 7-5 victory.

While Williams knows time is running out on his career at the highest level, he has not made it past the third round at a Slam event since 2017, insisting afterward that he plans to continue playing, starting with this month’s French Open. at Roland. Garros.

“I love this game,” Williams said. “I’m good at what I do. It’s easy to stay motivated and excited to do something so amazing. Not many people can do this.

“But I’m looking forward to a few days off. It’s been a lot of work. I’m looking forward to getting some rest before the clay courts.”

Meanwhile, Clijsters of Belgium, making her second career comeback and her first Grand Slam appearance since 2012, raised hopes for a surprise after winning the first set of her match with Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova.

However, the 37-year-old three-time US Open champion ran out of steam when 21-seeded Alexandrova completed a 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 victory.

This year’s women’s field in New York is more open than ever with world number one Ashleigh Barty, second seed Simona Halep and defending champion Bianca Andreescu all choosing to skip the tournament.

One of the main contenders for the title, second-seeded Sofia Kenin of the United States, came off the mark with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over non-seeded Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium.

The 21-year-old, who won an emotional inaugural Grand Slam title at this year’s Australian Open, later revealed that she had cried to herself before the match to relieve stress.

“Cry. That’s what I did. I mean, I had to let it out,” Kenin said. “Okay. It worked.”

Kenin will play Leylah Fernandez of Canada in the second round. Fernandez opened her campaign with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Vera Zvonareva on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, ninth seed Jo Konta won the ‘Battle of Britain’ against compatriot Heather Watson, winning 7-6 (9/7), 6-1.

“There will always be rivalry between compatriots,” Konta said. “It will always be this stressful.

“There will always be an element where people will have more judgments and more opinions abroad at home in a match like today,” added Konta, who will play Romanian Sorana Cirstea in the second round.
