Artists and police clash as protests escalate in Durban – the Citizen

A protest broke out in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, when several artists took to the streets on Wednesday asking the government to reopen music events with limited attendance.

#VulaPresident has been seen trending on social media with notable artists such as DJ Tira and DJ Bongz protesting as they blocked the N3 heading north and south, between Spaghetti Junction and the Pavilion.

Several people were reportedly arrested after police arrived at the scene with stun grenades and rubber bullets to disburse the protesters.

Last month, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the country would move the Level 2 blockade that allowed operating restaurants, bars and taverns, under certain protocols, such as hours of operation and the number of people.

However, restrictions on international travel, public gatherings, including musical events, funerals, and religious events, spectators at sporting events, as well as the curfew, were kept in place.

The creative scene was the hardest hit by the Covid-19 outbreak, as events, including live performances, were canceled or postponed.

The Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Nathi Mthethwa, had confirmed that the government had processed requests for the reopening of 35 venues, including 18 museums, seven cinemas, five theaters and five libraries in four provinces.

He confirmed that a total of R61 million has already been disbursed to the beneficiaries. In March, an aid fund of 150 million rand was allocated to help athletes, artists and technical personnel from both sectors.
