JOHANNESBURG – The Democratic Alliance (DA) said on Wednesday that John Moodey’s departure from the party was unfortunate and unnecessary.

Moodey announced his resignation as the official leader of the opposition in Gauteng and will no longer be a member.

But the party believed he was making a mistake and said the internal disciplinary action against him did not amount to a witch hunt.

Moodey joined the DA in 1998 and had served as the party’s provincial leader since 2012.

He joins former mayor of the Johannesburg Public Prosecutor’s Office Herman Mashaba and former party leader Mmusi Maimane on the list of people leaving the official opposition.

Maimane tweeted on Wednesday that the truth would come out.

An excited Moodey began his presentation by recounting the evolution of his political career.

“I am proud to have contributed to the success we achieved in increasing the support of the DA in all racial groups and in taking the fight to the ANC in its strengths,” he said.

He said he was leaving the DA because it was not the party, he had joined 22 years ago.

“Unfortunately, and after much soul searching, I have reached the point where I cannot defend these insensitive statements and statements. The party’s lack of principles in not addressing the issue of reparation in this unequal society, ”said Moodey.

Moodey faces charges for publicly defending Maimane. He believed that if he stayed longer, he would only have faced more unwarranted charges.
