The cold and rainy weather is expected to subside for the weekend.
- South Africa is currently experiencing windy and cold conditions.
- But the end is in sight, says the SA Weather Service.
- Warmer conditions are expected for the weekend.
South Africans often celebrate Spring Day on September 1 and images of flowers and the smell of jasmine in the air are the norm. But 2020 has typically pulled the rug, sending Mzansi rain, freezing winds, hail and general despondency to levels last seen when the alcohol ban was reinstated.
The South African Meteorological Service (SAWS) says that most of the country is experiencing windy and cold conditions as a result of a low pressure cut-off system that is about to make landfall. This system also carries the potential for heavy rain, severe thunderstorms, as well as strong winds to hurricanes in some places.
So it is not the ideal weather for a picnic.
On Wednesday, the southwestern parts of the country were expected to experience heavy downpours with potential flooding in the Cape Metropole, Overberg areas and in places above the Cape Winelands.
Otherwise, windy conditions are expected to persist in many places in the Cape provinces, the Free State, and the Northwest Province. Hurricane force winds will also continue along most of the country’s coastal belt, before moderating later in the day. The low-cut system will finally leave the country on Thursday, resulting in a general clearing of weather conditions.
A warmer weekend is expected
This means warmer weather for the weekend, says SAWS forecaster Kgolofelo Mahlangu.
“By Thursday it will be coming out and temperatures will start to rise again from Friday and it will be sunny again in most parts of the country this weekend.”
But, Mahlangu cautions, that doesn’t mean the ultimate in cold weather.
“Another cold front is expected in the Western Cape starting Sunday, but in the central and eastern parts of the country, we should have clear skies and warmer temperatures.”
So in short, don’t put away those blankets and panic-bought Old Brown Sherry just yet.
