Thobile Dyonase was convicted of six counts of rape, one of sexual assault, eight counts of kidnapping and eight counts of robbery with aggravated circumstances.
CAPE TOWN – The Western Cape Superior Court sentenced a serial rapist and robber to life in prison and 210 years in prison after he was found guilty of a series of serious crimes committed against women.
Thobile Dyonase was convicted of six counts of rape, one of sexual assault, eight counts of kidnapping and eight counts of robbery with aggravated circumstances.
Sentences range from five years to life in prison for the 23 charges brought against Dyonase. They have been ordered to run at the same time.
The court heard that Dyonase worked as a taxi driver in Nyanga. Between August and October 2017, she drove through the Tableview and Parklands areas, targeting women walking alone in the dark on her way to take public transportation to work.
His modus operandi would be to shout, as taxi drivers usually do, to get the attention of passengers.
Dyonase then spoke charmingly to her victim once she got into the cab before telling her she needed to take a different route to avoid traffic.
The serial attacker would then require the women to hand over their cell phones, money, bank cards, and sexually assaulted some of them.
Arguing to aggravate the sentence, prosecutor Louise Freister said that Dyonase was especially dangerous because his attacks were carefully planned and he targeted the most vulnerable, raping those victims and leaving them by the side of the road.
Victim impact statements compiled by a social worker demonstrated that Dyonase victims were deeply scarred. One of them told the court that she would run every time she saw a man, jump out of a moving vehicle every time a driver closed the doors, and feel fearful when a strange man looked at her or greeted her.
