Three teachers from Mpumalanga were arrested for allegedly assaulting students.

Three teachers from a secondary school in Breyten near Ermelo in Mpumalanga were arrested on Tuesday after they were allegedly implicated in an incident in which four students were assaulted.

According to the police spokesman, Brigadier Leonard Hlathi, the incident, which occurred on Monday, left the students, aged between 17 and 21, with injuries.

“According to the information, the educators instituted corporal punishment on the students and, as a result, the students suffered injuries. One of the students then reported the matter to his parents, who in turn alerted the police.

“Then a case was registered when three other students also came forward with accusations of assault against the three educators.”

The three teachers arrested were the school principal, a department head, and a level one teacher.

“All three were immediately detained and face a case of assault with the intent to cause serious bodily harm, as well as an additional charge of common battery,” Hlathi said.

The three professors, aged between 30 and 48, are expected to appear Wednesday at the Ermelo Justice of the Peace.
