Three people ages 26, 31 and 35 are expected to appear in Bronkhorstspruit Magistrates Court on Tuesday on charges of attempted fuel theft and disruption of infrastructure.
According to Hawks spokesman Colonel Katlego Mogale, they were captured while allegedly tampering with a Transnet pipeline in Bronkhorstspruit on Saturday night, trying to steal fuel.
“The Hawks Serious Organized Crime Investigation Unit responded promptly to the information received for further investigation,” Mogale said.
The suspects fled the scene. However, security personnel detained one person.
In the early hours of Sunday, the investigation team conducted a sting operation on the pipeline, where two more suspects were later arrested in a black Corsa bakkie. Apparently they were trying to rescue their accomplice.
“Among other items seized, the police seized the bakkie used in the commission of the crime, a generator, heavy drill, grinder, chisels and a welding machine. The investigation continues,” Mogale said.
