DStv’s big changes go into effect today

MultiChoice and SuperSport’s big changes to their DStv offering, including channels being cut and others being added, start today.

One of the biggest changes is the reorganized M-Net Movie channel lineup, which has been reduced from six to four channels.

MultiChoice noted that the reduction in M-Net’s movie channels does not affect the number of movies that subscribers have access to.

The Christmas pop-up channel fliekNET also becomes a permanent fixture on the DStv platform today.

This change is compatible with the recently announced Add Movies product, which allows some DStv subscribers to access M-Net’s top three movie channels for a fee.

DStv Compact Plus, Compact, Family, Access, EasyView and Indian packages can access M-Net Movies 1, M-Net Movies 2 and fliekNET for an additional R99 per month.

DStv Premium subscribers have access to all DStv content, including the four M-Net movie channels described below.

• M-Net Movies 1 offers award-winning animation, comedy, romance and drama films for the whole family on Channel 104.
• M-Net 2 Movies offers the latest adrenaline-pumping action, sci-fi, fantasy and suspense movies on channel 106.
• M – Net 3 Movies focuses on movie heroes and heroines in adventure classics, sci-fi and fantasy on channel 107.
• M – Net Movies 4 offers the world’s biggest box office hits, as well as its prequels and sequels, on Channel 108.
• fliekNET showcases blockbuster movies produced locally, favorite classics and a variety of Afrikaans films on channel 149.

Today, Multichoice also cut the BBC First channel on DStv, which it said is part of an “update to its British entertainment lineup”, with a selection of the British drama continuing on BBC Brit.

Big changes in the sports offer

The biggest changes introduced today are related to the SuperSport offering on DStv.

DStv customers already received two 24-hour ESPN channels on July 29 after MultiChoice signed an agreement with The Walt Disney Company Africa.

Sports leagues that are available on ESPN and ESPN2 include the National Basketball Association (NBA), the National Football League (NFL), and Major League Baseball (MLB).

The channels also offer live football from the English Football League (EFL), the Scottish Premier Football League (SPFL), the Dutch Eredivisie and the Major League Soccer (MLS).

SuperSport has now revised its sports channels on DStv, launching a new line of channels on flower bouquets.

The numbering system that it has used for its channels for the past two decades was eliminated, replacing it with a themed offering on individual sports.

There are now channels dedicated to leagues and sports, including PSL, Premier League, La Liga, rugby, cricket, golf, tennis, and motorsports.

The new channels will go beyond live sports and will also offer supplemental programming such as magazine shows and highlights.

SuperSport’s flagship channel, Grandstand, will host the best of any live curated sport available to Premium customers, including football, rugby, cricket, golf and tennis.

SuperSport CEO Gideon Khobane said the changes will see additional SuperSport channels of local and international sports content added to the DStv package.
