Eskom: more head loss ahead, additional stages ahead as utility battles break down

Eskom has said in a statement that due to a severely restricted generation system as a result of failures in various units, it will implement the load reduction again on Wednesday.

A total of 10 generating units have broken down at seven power plants in a matter of two days, with the power company citing “unreliable and outdated” infrastructure.

Continuous blackouts will last from 08:00 to 22:00 on Wednesday.

“Due to continued and severe generation supply restrictions as a result of multiple unit failures, Eskom will continue to implement stage 2 load shedding from 08:00 to 22:00 tomorrow … With the infrastructure of Obsolete and unreliable generation, along with a number of hazards in operating units, there is a high probability that additional stages of load shedding will be implemented at short notice, “Eskom warned.

One generator failed at the Arnot, Medupi, Lethabo and Matla power plants, while two units failed at Majuba, Camden and Tutuka.

Unplanned breakdowns amount to 11,435 MW, adding to the almost 5,000 MW already under planned maintenance.
