South Africa Lloyd Harris sailed into the second round of the US Open with a straight-sets victory over Italy Marco Cecchinato at Flushing Meadows on Monday.
South African No. 1 won 6-4, 7-5, 6-2 in one hour and 54 minutes to reach the second round of the US Open for the first time.
Harris, the world number 95, threw 12 aces compared to three for Cecchinato, who is ranked 108th, and also made 32 winners to his opponent’s 14.
The Italian is famous for reaching the semi-finals of the 2018 French Open, where he beat Serbian Novak Djokovic in the last eight.
With this victory, Harris equaled his best effort at a Grand Slam, having also reached the second round of the 2019 French Open.
Now he faces a tough second-round match against Belgian seventh seed David Goffin, who beat American Reilly Opelka 7-6 (7/2), 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Meanwhile, the other contestant from South Africa in the men’s singles, Kevin Anderson, retired after losing in four sets to German fifth seed Alexander Zverev.
South Africa’s doubles star, Klaasen Raven, and his Austrian partner Oliver Marach are the seventh seeds and will open their account against the unseeded pair of Philipp Oswald (Austria) and Marcus Daniell (New Zealand) on Wednesday.
