Lebohang ‘Cheeseboy’ Mokoena has revealed that he was seriously considering retirement when the opportunity to play for Swallows FC presented itself.
Swallows FC won promotion to prime minister on Sunday and her rise to the top has given the long-forgotten Mokoena a chance to once again shine on the most important stage of national football.
“I remember when I left the same team [Ajax Cape Town] than us [Swallows] they were a challenge for [promotion] with [this season]”I was already thinking of retiring,” he said on Soccer Zone.
“Because every time I knocked, no one would open the door for me and I felt like everyone was saying ‘this guy doesn’t have it anymore.”
The 33-year-old said he got down on one knee and pleaded with Swallows management for a chance to show what he is “capable of.”
He certainly proved his worth as the Diepkloof-born winger played an important role for Swallows in central midfield, and his ability to win balls and passes were key elements of his game.
“I fell to my knees, I spoke to the coach [Brandon Truter], President [Panyaza Lesufi] and the president [David Mogashoa] ….. they all gave me [a chance]”Said the captain of the Swallows.
“They know what I’m capable of, so I just needed to get there and get back in shape for the game where they normally know I am.”
The former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns star said returning to world-class soccer will always be a special chapter in his life.
“Jah, well, I think it’s something that will leave, especially in my life, because for one I have won the PSL title before, so win this [promotion] it also makes it more special.
Mokoena, who was promoted to the Pirates’ first team during the 2002-2003 season and won the league title with coach Roy Barreto.
“… And even to return [to PSL] even when I got discharged, it makes it really more special and makes me want to work harder, “he said.
A few seasons ago, Mokoena had no club and struggled to stay focused. The lifeline of his career came when former Maccabi FC manager Mokete Tsotetsi gave him a chance.
Maccabi then switched to Swallows after a purchase.
