Cape Town – Struggling power company Eskom said in a statement that it would implement Stage 2 load reduction from 12:00 to 22:00 on Tuesday.
“Eskom regrets to inform the public that due to a severely restricted generation system as a result of multiple unit failures, it has become necessary to implement a load shedding from 12:00 to 22:00 on September 1.”
He added that ten generation units in seven plants suffered breakdowns in the last 48 hours.
“One generation each at the Arnot, Medupi, Lethabo, Matla power plants, while two units at the Majuba, Camden and Tutuka power plants also broke down.”
Eskom said this, along with the need to conserve emergency generation reserves, requires a landslide to be implemented to protect the system.
“Unplanned breakdowns amount to 11,665 MW of capacity, in addition to the 4,558 MW currently under planned maintenance.”
The power company warned that any further deterioration in generation performance could lead to an escalation of continuous short-term blackouts.
“Given that aging generation infrastructure is unreliable and volatile, this restricted power system is expected to persist for the remainder of the week.”
The public has been urged to “help reduce electricity usage to help Eskom reduce the instance of load shedding.”
