CAPE TOWN – Minister for Human Settlements Lindiwe Sisulu has welcomed the Western Cape Superior Court’s decision to review and annul the sale of the Tafelberg property at Sea Point.

The ruling was handed down on Monday.

The Western Cape government decided to sell the site to the Phyllis Jowell Jewish School for 135 million rand about five years ago, but social housing activists challenged the sale, arguing that the land should be used for affordable housing opportunities.

Minister Sisulu said it was now possible for the government, through the Social Housing and Regulatory Authority, to build units for qualified beneficiaries while repairing space apartheid in central Cape Town.

Sisulu said he hoped that all affected parties respect and abide by the ruling and put the needs of the people first.

He added that the focus should be on restoring the dignity of people through the provision of decent and affordable accommodation.

Yonela Diko, spokesperson for the ministry: “We remain committed to responding to the housing needs of our people. This will only be achieved if we have access to well-located parcels of land and spheres of government take advantage of these lands for the development of human settlements.”

Sisulu said that Cape Town was one of the metropolitan areas with the longest housing backlog and now the availability of the Tafelberg property allowed the Regulatory and Social Housing Authority to improve that backlog.

He said the government had set a goal of delivering 30,000 social housing units in various provinces over the next few years.
