JOHANNESBURG – A Westbury resident who on Sunday joined Eldorado Park residents protesting the fatal shooting of 16-year-old Nathaniel Julies, said the government doesn’t care about people of color.
In an interview with SABC TV, he said the government was “doing everything possible to let people of color die.”
The teenager, who lived with Down syndrome, was shot and killed, allegedly by the police.
That sparked riots in the area that saw continued battles between police and residents.
The man, who was not identified, was one of many people from other areas who joined Eldorado Park residents in a march from the local police station to Nathaniel’s home. At the same time, a solidarity march took place in Eersterus.
Holding signs, some of which read “F * ck the police,” the Eldorado Park protesters, some of whom were children, were accompanied by a vehicle blasting music through huge speakers.
They sang, clapped and danced as they marched behind and to the side of the vehicle.
The Westbury man said the government had brought drugs and weapons into his areas and also sent his “gangsters” to shoot his children.
He said children were being shot all the time in Westbury and that the police did nothing about it.
“Supporting this event at Eldorado Park is very important to us as a color. If you look around at the police station, they are just black cops (officers).
“I hope those two cops who were involved (in the Nathaniel shooting) have been locked up.
“The government marginalizes people of color and it is very painful,” he said.
The man said the police officers who fired the shots that killed Nathaniel had no hearts. He also accused the government of being ruthless and not caring about people of color.
“When you need an honest government, not the government that steals and watches its own pockets.
“We need suitable leaders in this country. They call this a rainbow nation. Where is this Rainbow Nations when they are only black in power? I ask.
Other protesters claimed that their councilors had been intimidated since the incident. They also said that the entire management of the Eldorado Park Police Station needs to be changed as residents are being victimized.
Two officers from the Eldorado Park Police Station have been arrested and charged with Nathaniel’s murder.
They also face charges of possessing prohibited ammunition and thwarting the ends of justice.
They are expected to appear in Protea Glen Magistrates Court on Monday.
Eldorado Park residents are expected to come to court in numbers.
