President Cyril Ramaphosa says the National Executive Committee backed the open letter Ramamphosa wrote last week condemning corruption, and emphasized that there is a “choreographed” campaign against the president, who is trying to “confront the scourge of corruption.”
Ramaphosa was addressing the media after the NEC meetings over the weekend.
Ramaphosa says that the cadres who have been charged must step aside from their role, pending the completion of their cases.
It says the NEC strongly condemned the murder of 16-year-old Nathaniel Julies and reflected on its ongoing program on gender-based violence. It says that parliament has been urged to speed up bills that seek to curb gender-based violence and femicide.
The NEC emphasized what appears to be a choreographed campaign against the president of the ANC [Ramaphosa]This will not distract the movement from taking an intensified program against corruption and capture of the state as ordered by the 54th National Congress.
In this sense, we will also work with other sectors of society and the population in general to confront this scourge of corruption ”.
He said the NEC also decided that cadres in the movement who are formally charged with corruption and other serious crimes should immediately withdraw from all leadership positions in the ANC, in legislatures or other government structures pending the completion of their cases “.
The president said another resolution was that those guilty of any corruption should resign and face the consequences according to the ANC constitution.
Ramaphosa said the NEC received a report from the Nation’s Working Committee (NWC) on ANC members involved in allegations of corruption.
He added that the ANC has pledged to “continue fighting racism and tribalism” in the country.
Ramaphosa says the government has connected with Zanu PF of Zimbabwe to see how the ANC can support the government.
The NEC was also concerned about the insurgency in Mozambique, and was encouraged to support Mozambique and continue to act within the parameters established by Sadec.
The ANC must provide detailed reports on these two matters, Ramaphosa says.
The president said the government’s Covid-19 funding of 500 billion rand, which he says consists of, among other things, tax relief measures.
However, he said aid money may not be enough to eradicate all of the country’s economic problems. It says the NEC will soon convene a special meeting on an economic recovery program.
Ramaphosa said that it was stressed at the meeting that the ANC must fight corruption and that it is drawing a line in the sand against corruption. He says the NEC was equally determined as a movement to participate in the fight to end violence against women and children, and to end femicide.
“The ANC had a really great meeting,” says the president.
