CAPE TOWN – Eighteen people arrested during protests in Parliament over the weekend will appear in court on Monday.

Two separate groups of protesters gathered outside the parliamentary compound to protest against gender-based violence and murders on farms.

However, the demonstrations turned into chaos when the police intervened to disperse the crowd.

Jesse Brand, a protester, insists that the protest she helped organize was peaceful.

He claimed that the situation became tense when a group of motorcyclists arrived as part of a separate demonstration.

“One of the motorcyclists got into the barricade, broke it and the policemen took him off the bicycle and threw a fist and that was when the police opened fire and threw stun grenades.”

Brand said police acted when a bicyclist climbed onto a statue to hang a flag.

Police have also been accused of being clumsy when a group of protesting restaurant workers tried to march on Parliament several weeks ago.
