Animals damaged Kruger National Park housing units during closure

While dozens of SANPark accommodation facilities stood empty during the coronavirus shutdown that halted all vacation travel, animals occupied some of the facilities and left them damaged.

SANParks said that despite resuming operations at most of its parks, the damaged accommodations will not be available to guests until cleanup and repair operations are completed.

“We have logistical challenges regarding our willingness to resume full operations at some parks. In addition to the planned maintenance work, it has been discovered that most of the units that were unoccupied during the shutdown were damaged primarily by primates, squirrels and bats. We are moving quickly to repair them, ”said Fundisile Mketeni, CEO of SANParks.

Mketeni said they were pushing to complete repair operations ahead of an expected travel spike in September.

The most affected fields were Skukuza and Lower Sabie.

These would operate at minimum capacity until October 1, 2020 and December 15, respectively.

The Biyamiti, Maroela and Orpen camps remain closed.

Biyamiti was expected to reopen on October 15, Maroela on November 1, and Orpen on November 7.
