Johannesburg – A group of gunmen slammed their victim’s new Mercedes Benz van into the wall while fleeing the police.
Two of them were arrested and the other two remain at large.
The incident occurred on Friday afternoon.
Johannesburg Police Captain Xoli Mbele said the allegations were that the three went to a house in Fairlands where they found a man busy washing his car. They were traveling in a Toyota Hilux bakkie.
Two of the men had firearms and one had a knife, Mbele said. The fourth was in the Hilux.
He yelled alerting his wife to close the door. They tied him up with cables and rushed into the house.
However, Mbele said, the man managed to untie himself.
“He managed to run to his neighbor and contacted the police. The suspects ransacked the house and took jewelry, cell phones, three laptops and an iPad.
“They also took some of his wife’s cash and damaged the wall-mounted television while trying to remove it,” he said.
Mbele said the fourth suspect who was waiting outside at the Hilux left, leaving his accomplices behind after seeing the victim running towards the neighbor’s house.
He said the three remaining men took their victim’s new white Mercedes Benz SUV and fled the scene in it.
“The tracker signal was activated and the police responded and saw the vehicle in Soweto. When he saw the police, he sped up and lost control, damaging the wall of one of the houses.
“One suspect managed to escape while two were detained. Police recovered a knife, some of the jewelry, a laptop, money, and running shoes.
“Some of the items were loaded into a white Hilux bakkie that is still loose.
Mbele said investigations were still ongoing and the suspects were due to appear in Brixton Magistrates Court on Monday.
