Former elite athlete Nick Bester has been admitted to hospital after being assaulted over the weekend in an alleged assault.

Photographs appeared on social media yesterday, apparently taken before Bester was admitted to hospital.

“He was attacked and brutally beaten by thugs while training this morning,” said a source close to Bester. He was reportedly left with three broken ribs, a broken cheekbone and serious tissue damage.

“He was attacked and apparently they are going to operate on him, but we don’t know more than that at the moment,” said Adriaan Cronje, who worked as a manager with Bester at the Nedbank Club.

Bester, a former ironman triathlete who won the KwaZulu-Natal Comrade Marathon in 1991, was no stranger to injury or seizure.

In 2010 he was assaulted by three men while training in Pretoria.

They kicked, beat and threatened him with a knife, leaving him with a broken rib, and his attackers stole his bicycle.

In December 2016, he also landed in the hospital and required surgery on a thumb after saving a friend from a possible shark attack in Plettenberg Bay.

Bester, one of the most versatile athletes in the country during his competitive days, is now the athlete manager at Nedbank Running Club.

He remains a prominent figure, particularly in road racing circles, and is a regular season in local racing.
