The police have arrested 15 people, some of whom are former police officers or on duty, in connection with fraud, corruption, money laundering and theft.

The defendants were allegedly involved in dubious supply chain processes over an R56m car marking tender.

Nine of those arrested are current or former SAPS members.

SAPS spokesman Brig Vishnu Naidoo said the defendants were arrested between 9.30am on Friday and 1.30pm on Saturday.

“The arrest of these 15 suspects over the past weekend brings the total to 31 defendants in connection with the multi-million dollar police vehicle marking case. This after 16 defendants, including a retired police general, senior and junior officers, as well as vendors, were arrested on June 4 of this year.

“The last 15 defendants were all indicted yesterday [Saturday] and they must appear for the first time in Pretoria magistrates court on Monday on charges of fraud, corruption, money laundering and theft, “Naidoo said.

It said the charges were related to alleged “tampering with the acquisition documents for the brand of vehicles and a number of other transactions.”

After their appearance Monday, the 15 are expected to join their co-defendants in court on September 29. The 16 suspects initially arrested are currently out on bail.

Another person, identified as Linda Lubanyana, is also sought in connection with the case. The police have asked for any information about him or his whereabouts to be released, either by calling the Crime Stop number on 086 00 10111 or through MySAPSApp.
