JOHANNESBURG – President Cyril Ramaphosa will appear before the integrity commission of the African National Congress (ANC) over the controversial campaign donations, ANC Under-Secretary-General Jessie Duarte said on Sunday.
Ramaphosa has bet his reputation on cleaning up South African politics since he replaced former President Jacob Zuma two and a half years ago, but has been limited by factional battles in the ANC, where a section of the party remains loyal to Zuma.
“He has contacted the integrity committee and will be coming there for a discussion on CR17 funds,” Duarte said during an interview with eNCA.
The CR17 funds refer to campaign donations that Ramaphosa received in 2017 when he was running for leadership of the ANC.
Duarte did not say when the president would appear before the commission.
Members of the ANC have been removed from their positions as a result of previous recommendations from the commission.
The Public Protector said in a report that Ramaphosa had “deliberately misled” Parliament about a R500,000 donation he received.
Ramaphosa told Parliament at the time that the money was obtained legally for the services he rendered, but later amended it saying the payment was a donation to his campaign.
The saga has proven to be a headache for Ramaphosa, providing ammo for his enemies.
Zuma, who faces a corruption trial, accused him on Friday of discrediting the party, a sign of growing divisions within the ANC. The party held its national executive committee conference this weekend.
