A couple died on their farm in Normandien, near Newcastle in KwaZulu-Natal, police said Sunday.
Unknown attackers shot the farm owner, 63, and his wife, both 60, as well as their dog, according to police spokesman Capt. Nqobile Gwala.
Police attended the crime scene around 6 a.m. Sunday.
Newscastle Township identified the couple as Glen and Vida Rafferty.
Glen was a gentleman, fluent in Zulu, and very involved in the farming community, a local farmer and Freedom Front Plus member Dr. Lourie Bosman told Netwerk24.
The attack is believed to have occurred on Saturday night.
“The suspects ransacked the house, the cameras were destroyed and a camera check was taken,” Gwala said.
They fled in the couple’s vehicle, which was later found abandoned in Elandslaagte.
Newcastle Mayor Ntuthuko Mahlaba described the attack as a “gruesome atrocity” and called for the swift arrest of the killers.
“Glen Rafferty and his wife were progressive people who cared deeply for the Newcastle community. They were both loved and fondly admired for their contribution to the betterment of our society,” Mahlaba said.
“Glen and Vida understood the culture and tradition of our municipality. Their premature deaths are a great loss to our community, and the peasant fraternity in particular. The murder of peasants and their workers must be denounced with the contempt it deserves in all respects. moment. . “
Mahlaba urged anyone with information to contact the nearest police station and implored farmers and farm workers to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the police.
