Pretoria – Fifteen people have been arrested in connection with alleged corruption in connection with a R56 million car brand tender.
Nine of the arrested suspects are former members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) and are on duty, while six are associated with or are suppliers, and a seventh is on the run.
The defendants were detained between 9:30 a.m. on Friday and 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.
The arrests are the result of an integrated team made up of members of the National Commissioner’s Task Force and the NPA Directorate of Investigation under attorney Hermione Cronje.
The arrest of the 15 suspects brings the total to 31 defendants in connection with the multi-million dollar police vehicle marking case. This after 16 defendants, including a retired police general, senior and junior officers, as well as vendors, were arrested in June this year.
The 15 defendants will appear for the first time in the Pretoria trial court on Monday on charges of fraud, corruption, money laundering and theft, allegedly related to the manipulation of acquisition documents for the vehicle brand and a series of other transactions.
“It has always been very clear that the criminality of SAPS members will not be tolerated or tolerated, working with the Directorate of Investigation has helped accelerate this,” said South African National Police Service Commissioner General Khehla John Sitole.
