Durban – A march to highlight the plight of women and children in South Africa failed after police had to use stun grenades and tear gas to disperse crowds after violent clashes outside Parliament on Saturday.
At least 18 people have been arrested.
They have been charged with public violence and intentional damage to property.
The group, made up of hundreds of students and people from various civic organizations, went to Parliament to demand that more funds be allocated to prevent gender-based violence. The group also called for better support services for survivors of gender-based violence.
It is unclear what sparked the clash, however police had to use stun grenades and tear gas to disperse the crowd.
In the latest incident of gender-based violence, a charred body was found on the side of the road in Mthwalume, on the south coast of KwaZulu-Natal. The body was covered in plastic and dumped on the side of the road.
Earlier this week it was reported that at least five women were killed in Gauteng in a matter of 48 hours.
It is widely reported that the number of cases of gender-based violence has increased since the implementation of the blockade. According to Nehawu, the cases had increased by at least 500%.
“We find it abhorrent that women continue to be killed and abused, mainly by people close to them. The Covid-19 crisis has exacerbated the problems faced by women in abusive relationships, because they are trapped with their abusers without the possibility of escaping or asking. it helps, “the union said.
