The 32-year-old recently left South Africa to be with his family in the UK and will continue to play his professional football there.
Bafana Bafana midfielder Dean Furman has officially joined Carlisle United from League Two.
The hard-tackle player has signed a one-year contract with the English team, which means he is signed until the end of the 2020-21 season which begins in early September.
According to the club, Furman underwent a one-week trial before being offered this deal.
Furman left South Africa in June following the expiration of his contract with SuperSport United.
This was after informing the Tshwane giants of his intentions to return to the UK and be with his family.
Furman’s new coach, Chris Beech, is confident that the acquisition of the midfielder could prove excellent for the club given the player’s experience.
“This could turn out to be an excellent signing for us, and I’m delighted to have pulled it off,” Beech told Carlisle’s website.
“I was aware of Dean when he moved to Oldham from the Rangers years ago. When he was a young player, he had a real impact and subsequently moved to the Championship with Doncaster.”
What excites Beech the most is Furman’s ability to dictate games in the middle of the park and he feels like he will improve the teammates around him.
“He’s such a smart footballer, with the ability to dictate a game; his retention and recovery of the ball is exceptional and he adds leadership and maturity in that area of the field when needed,” added Beech.
“Dean will help one hundred percent improve our other midfielders by applying his work, and that’s a huge advantage for me. We have some real talent in the building and I’m excited to see that progress.
“He has been playing his football in South Africa but had a desire to go back to the UK to raise his family.
“While there were lucrative offers on the table for him to go abroad again, he gave that up to buy on our trip, and is another who wants to be successful.”
Beech isn’t concerned that Furman is already on the other side of 30 and was actually impressed with his fitness level during his week-long test.
“Dean is on the older side of the players we’ve recruited this summer at 32, and he’s usually the young energy we’re looking for, but nonetheless, he’s in fantastic shape, super fit, and generally tops the charts. statistics in terms of distances covered in training, the game is maintained and recovered for as long as it has been with us, “concluded Beech.
“He’s a great professional with a great attitude, and I hope he makes us even better.”
