Durban – A driver who crashed his Ford Focus into an embankment and collided with a home in Verulam claimed he swerved to avoid what he believed to be a chicken crossing the street.

Reaction Unit spokesman Prem Balram said two people were slightly injured in the accident.

Balram said the vehicle was traveling on Jackal Road in Waterloo in Verulam, north of Durban, when the driver swerved to avoid hitting something on the road.

“At approximately 2.47 pm, the Verulam Operations Center of the South African Reaction Unit received multiple calls from the public reporting the accident. Upon arrival, it was discovered that a white Ford Focus crashed into a house,” said Balram.

He said the driver initially explained that while traveling down Jackal Road, he swerved to avoid a boy who had run across the street.

“He later claimed that it was not a boy and that it could have been a dog or a chicken,” Balram said.

He added that the man lost control of his vehicle and rushed into a house below road level.

“The occupants of the residence were not injured. The Ford Focus was severely damaged.

The 42-year-old driver and his 19-year-old passenger suffered moderate injuries. They were treated at the scene before being taken to the hospital by ambulance, “said Balram.
