Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp faced the media ahead of his team’s Community Shield clash with Arsenal on Saturday.
Defending Premier League champions will be looking to add more silverware to their trophy collection. But the focus at Klopp’s press conference was more on the future of some of his players.
Liverpool’s dominance in the league last season and in the Champions League last year has forced the world to stand up and take note of its key stars.
The Reds’ three forwards are untouchable, but one of their midfielders has been linked to a big move to Barcelona. Algemeen Daglad said last week that Ronald Koeman, the new Camp Nou manager, wants to sign Georginio Wijnaldum this summer.
The Dutchman has been an integral part of the Liverpool squad for the past two years, but has entered the final year of his contract. The Reds have yet to tie him to a new deal, which could open an opportunity for interested clubs to make their move.
Klopp was questioned about the status of Wijnaldum’s contract and the Liverpool manager did not seem overly concerned about the fact that he has less than 12 months left on his current contract.
The Liverpool Echo quoted him as saying: “An open contract situation, we don’t talk about that. Everything remains between us and the player. Everything is fine for the moment. Gini looked good in the preseason, he played some good seasons for us. That’s all I can say “.
Koeman knows Wijnaldum very well from his time with the Dutch national team. That explains the reported interest in Wijnaldum and Barcelona could really get a shot this summer.
Liverpool have been strongly linked to a move by Thiago Alcantara of Bayern Munich. If the Spaniard arrives, Wijanaldum may be allowed to leave, but if that doesn’t happen, he is likely to stay at Anfield for one more season.
