Cape Town: Opposition parties and civil society have criticized Prime Minister Alan Winde’s push for the Western Cape to move to level 3 of the blockade, along with a hotspot plan.

Winde said: “With our healthcare system in place, it is simply no longer possible to maintain level 4 restrictions anywhere in South Africa.

“Along with the determined implementation of this hotspot plan, alert level 3 should be adopted for the entire Western Cape.”

But Cameron Dugmore of the ANC said: “The prime minister’s call is reckless and is clearly driven by a DA agenda, an agenda of exceptionalism (and) that puts economic recovery at the cost of people’s lives.”

“The ANC will start a consultation process with companies, workers and civil society starting next week. Our goal is to find the best solution that puts people’s lives first and at the same time begin the selective opening of the economy. “

Brett Herron of The Good Party added: “We would all love to move to level 3, but it is obvious to any rational person that it cannot happen as long as our trajectory shows an increase in infections and deaths.

“If the province does not move to level 3 because we have not decreased our infection rate, then the DA and its arrogant attitude toward closure regulations and medical protocols must bear some responsibility.”

Melikhaya Xego of the EFF said: “The Prime Minister’s position on this issue is in stark contrast to that of the Minister of National Health, Zweli Mkhize, when he recently visited the Western Cape.

“Our view is that the prime minister is desperate to resume economic activities at all costs, even if that would have a negative impact on the health of life for most people in the province.”

Zuko Mndayi, spokesperson for the South African Youth Council in the province, said: “We are convinced that Prime Minister Alan Winde is in denial.

“We want to remind you that, although you speak from the comfort of your opulent home, that is conducive to self-quarantine, there are districts without quarantine sites or health centers. Police stations are closing due to the virus, cluster transmissions still prevail. in retail stores, and people are losing their lives due to contracting the virus. “
