CAPE TOWN – The African National Congress (ANC) in the Western Cape said Prime Minister Alan Winde’s call for the province to move to Level 3 blockade restrictions was reckless.

In a statement on Thursday, Winde emphasized that the relaxation of the restrictions would be in conjunction with a plan to deal with the critical points of infection.

This came after President Cyril Ramaphosa’s speech on Wednesday night during which he announced that the government would begin consultations to relax the restrictions at level 3, but not in areas of concern.

ANC’s Cameron Dugmore said the prime minister’s call was clearly driven by a DA agenda and that it was reckless because the Western Cape was the national epicenter of the pandemic.

“The province’s call is clearly driven by an agenda of exceptionalism, an agenda that is putting people’s lives at risk for economic recovery. This call from Winde and the DA is not the best for our province ”.

Dugmore said the ANC opposed what he called a general approach, of putting the economy on people’s lives.

“To make matters worse, there were no consultations with workers, companies and civil society. In fact, there is no plan to ensure that all workplaces are safe. Transmission rates are the highest in our province due to serious mistakes made by this same provincial government. “

Dugmore said that starting next week, they plan to start a consultation process with companies, workers and civil society, and will also consult with the education sector, parents, teachers and students, to find the best solution. to put people’s lives first while they are at the same time the selective opening of the economy begins.
