A mentally challenged woman who went missing from a psychiatric facility in KwaZulu-Natal has been rescued from a gorge, paramedic services said on Thursday.
IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson Paul Herbst said they had assisted Umhlali SAPS K9 Search and Rescue in looking for the 45-year-old woman in the Kranskop area.
He said she went missing from the Umphumulo psychiatric ward in Maphumulo just outside KwaDukuza, north of Durban, on Monday.
“Yesterday the lady was spotted in the Tafamus area in dense forest, by passing herdsmen. The lady was unable to walk and the herdsmen went to the nearest village to call for assistance.”

Herbst said community members took food and water to where the woman was last seen, but she was no longer there.
“IPSS Medical Rescue together with Umhlali K9 Search and Rescue arrived on scene, and with the help of rescue dogs the elderly (sic) female was located down a gorge, severely dehydrated.”
He said she was extracted using a rescue stretcher and carried out of the valley approximately 2km to the roadside, from where she was taken to hospital for further care.
