LIVESTREAM: President Ramaphosa will address the nation – The Mail & Guardian

President Cyril Ramaphosa is scheduled to address the nation on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. on ongoing measures to control the spread of the coronavirus through the implementation of a risk-adjusted strategy.

The president’s speech follows several meetings of the Cabinet and the National Coronavirus Command Council.

In his last speech to the nation on April 23, Ramaphosa announced a relaxation of the country. emergency shutdown. He said a gradual reopening of the economy will begin on May 1. Ramaphosa noted that while a blockade remains the most effective way to limit the spread of the virus, the prosperity of South Africans would be at risk with a continued blockade.

“The national blockade cannot be sustained indefinitely,” he said. “People need to eat, earn a living, and businesses must be able to produce and trade, generate income, and keep people employed.”

However, the president noted that the blockade has worked, and the need to save lives and prevent the country’s health system from being overwhelmed remains paramount. In consultation with scientists and other experts, the government has introduced a tiered response system to the virus: South Africans can find some echoes in the tiered system to that used for load shedding, with a level five indicating the strictest response.

Note that the broadcast airs at 8:30 p.m.
