Several stores in Sebokeng, Gauteng, were found to be selling expired food and meat on Wednesday.

The discovery was made during a visit to the Thabong Mall by Gauteng Community Safety MEC Faith Mazibuko and Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi.

They were there as part of the province’s exco council deployments at various province malls to assess owners and buyers’ compliance during Level 4 closure.

During the visit, Mazibuko and Lesufi ensured that social distancing in stores was respected and that masks were worn.

MECs ordered meat to be removed from the shelves.

“Emfuleni’s health inspectors helped in that regard to verify that the meat portions were in line with the required health and safety standards.

“They immediately removed the meat products, but no fines were issued as they do not have the authority to fine, only the subways are authorized to do so,” Morwane said.

Expired meat and oil

Expired cooking oil was also found on the shelves of Roots Butchery, as well as expired meat products at Pick ‘n Pay.

The department said police authorities handled several cases of expired food products in stores across the province.

The stores were not closed or fined, but received warnings.

“It is a matter of concern that store owners take advantage of shoppers. The health of our citizens has been compromised for too long.

“There is a need to inspect these stores regularly, to ensure compliance with Covid-19 closure regulations and the required health standards,” Morwane said.
