CAPE TOWN – The South African Post Office (Sapo) could join companies like South African Airways (SAA) as one of the state entities that succumb to the effects of COVID-19.
Parliamentarians received an update on the entity’s financial health on Tuesday night.
The Department of Communications and Digital Technologies briefed Parliament on its coronavirus related programs and projects.
The department said there were always systemic problems affecting the post office even before the pandemic and the shutdown.
CEO Robert Nkuna told the committee that the department had asked the Toad for a report on his financial health so they can assess the situation.
He warned that paying wages could soon become a problem: “I would not like the Post Office to be one of the entities that will be seriously affected.”
Nkuna said another concern was the fact that they had more than 9,000 payment points for social grants with former contractor Cash Paymaster Services, but that number had decreased significantly.
He said that at the age of COVID-19, people who generally went to the Post Bank were now also collecting money at South African Social Security Agency payment points and in supermarkets.
