CAPE TOWN – Social Development Minister Lindiwe Zulu said her department would be tightening the screws on organizations that distribute food to those in need during COVID-19.
On Monday, Zulu said that while the organizations were helping the government distribute food, there were health guidelines to follow.
He was outlining his department’s plans for social subsidies and food distribution for the next few weeks.
The minister said the help the government received made his job a little easier.
“Around 350,000 food packages have been distributed by other departments and solidarity in the nine provinces.”
But Zulu said there were regulations that must be followed.
“Do not distribute food without talking to the communities, without your letting us know because what will happen is that all those who distribute without following the COVID-19 protocols will be arrested.”
She said organizations must follow strict guidelines and inform their department of their intentions to deliver food.
So far, just over 525,000 food packages have been distributed to those in need.
