The mayor of Ekurhuleni, Mzwandile Masina, decided to suspend his speech writer, Malaika Mahlatsi, after a lovers dispute that broke out on social media.

Mahlatsi was suspended on full pay, and the mayor said he had violated the City Systems Law, the Code of Conduct and the City of Ekurhuleni’s social media policy.

While it was Mahlatsi’s former lover, who turned to social media with damning accusations against the speech writer and social commentator, she, too, got involved back and forth, revealing that she had approached the police after the deterioration of their brief relationship.

The former lover of the speech writer also accused her of writing a doctoral thesis for the mayor of Ekurhuleni.

It is also believed that there is an audio clip of Mahlatsi stating that the mayor reduced the salaries of the municipality’s employees without consulting.

“A municipality staff member must act at all times in the best interest of the municipality and in such a way that the credibility and integrity of the municipality are not compromised,” Masina spokesperson Phakamile Mbengashe said in a statement Tuesday. .

Mbengashe said the municipality’s social media policy also ruled that personal use of social media platforms must be carried out in a way that does not indicate any link or association with the subway.

“The [City of Ekurhuleni] however, it will take the necessary measures if users make use of social networks in a way that has a direct, indirect or potential impact on the [City’s] reputation or interests, “continued the mayor’s spokesman.

Widely consulted

Mbengashe said Masina consulted extensively and called department heads, mayoral committee members, the city manager and the city financial officer to join him when he made the decision to donate 33% of his salary to Solidarity Fund, which was created to raise funds for the battle against the deadly novel coronavirus.

He also said that those who had agreed to donate portions of their earnings had signed commitments to authorize the human resources department to pay them their wages.

“The executive mayor has no authority to decrease the salaries of municipal staff,” said Mbengashe.

Mbengashe said Masina was also in an “early stage” of her research proposal for a PhD in philosophy.

“At no time has any person authored or contributed to the content of the research proposal, including anyone who was reviewing or reviewing the material,” said Mbengashe.
