Durban – The investigation into a horrible accident on the N2, near Umgeni in Durban on Tuesday morning, has taken a different turn. Police now believe the vehicle may have been shot after bullet shrapnel was found inside the car.
According to the police, the vehicle was traveling north on the N2 and driving towards the ramp towards Inanda.
Garrith Jamieson of Rescue Care said emergency crews rushed to the scene where a driver was believed to have lost control of the vehicle he was driving, causing him to swerve before turning over.
“The jaws of life and other hydraulic equipment were used to free the occupants. Unfortunately, seven people had already succumbed to the injuries they had sustained, four women and three men were pronounced dead at the scene. One occupant had suffered serious injuries and he was stabilized on the scene before being transported to a nearby hospital to receive the additional care he needed, “he said.
An officer from the Durban Accident Combat Unit told eNCA that they had established that the vehicle may have been shot.
“This is taking a different investigation into the accident. We have established a bullet entry in the rear right of the vehicle. We found bullet shrapnel in the vehicle. We are waiting for coroners to arrive so they can continue the investigation,” Captain Raj Rooplal.
Provincial police spokesman Colonel Thembeke Mbele confirmed that the police were investigating further.
“We can confirm an accident in which a vehicle was traveling in the M19 with eight people when it overturned. A total of seven people died at the scene while another was taken to the hospital for medical attention. The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation. ” Mbele said.
