It is understood that the 27-year-old has signed an agreement with La Rochelle In March, Stormers coach John Dobson confirmed the change Tuesday.

Leyds and props Wilco Louw, who is also on his way to go from pen to paper with the English club HarlequinsThey were to watch the 2020 Super Rugby season with the Stormers.

But with that competition suspended indefinitely and with South Africa still at level four of a national blockade as the fight against the global coronavirus continues, the return to professional competition in the country still seems far away.

“We have a couple of players going to Europe, who are leaving after the end of Super Rugby on June 30,” Dobson said.

“I’m sure those boys will still go, so we will be without Dillyn Leyds, Wilco Louw and Jamie (Roberts) are already gone. Therefore, those boys will not be available for any national competition from July 1.”

Welsh legend Roberts, who joined the Stormers for 2020, has returned to the UK.

Dobson added that it would be unfortunate to lose Leyds and Louw without them having a final race at Newlands.

“They are Springboks and they have both been very good servers to us, especially Dillyn,” said Dobson.

“It has probably been in the system for about 10 years.

“The fact that they may have already played their last game for the Stormers is very sad. I wouldn’t mind if they stayed a little longer so we could play a game and say goodbye, but that’s emotional and less important in this setting.”
