Sassa CEO Busisiwe Memela urged people who do not qualify for the Covid-19 grant not to apply.

The Covid-19 Social Allowance is scheduled to take effect at 12 noon on Monday, allowing those with no income to apply for the R350 unemployment benefit. The grant is intended to help those who do not get a grant of any kind, or any other form of income or stipend, such as the NSFAS allowance for example.

“In the pilot we did, 50% of the people who submitted the application were those who did not qualify. We urge people who do not qualify not to apply; the grant is intended only for those who really need the help … If you receive a social grant, you should not apply.

“We want to stretch the rand we have to be able to help the most vulnerable in our society,” said Memela.

Applications will be made online across the country, to allow Sassa to also capture data while processing applications. People who will qualify for the grant will benefit from it for six months. People who earn from the unemployment insurance fund or other similar benefit are also excluded.

Memela confirmed that all requests will be made online and will require the following information: ID number, first and last name, gender and disability details, bank details, and residential address. Proof of address will not be required.

Requests can be made through WhatAapp number 082 046 8553. People who do not have smartphones can use their previous models to send this number USSD * 134 * 7737 # and follow the instructions in the answer. People with email access can send their requests to [email protected]
