Washington – Tesla chief Elon Musk threatened on Saturday to remove the headquarters of his electric car and plant outside California after local authorities prevented him from resuming production due to the coronavirus pandemic.
“Frankly, this is the last straw. Tesla will now move its headquarters and future programs to Texas / Nevada immediately,” Musk tweeted in a long tirade, characteristic of past online rantings that are not necessarily carried out.
Referring to the California city where the cars are produced, Musk said that “whether we even maintain Fremont’s manufacturing activity,” will depend on “how Tesla is treated in the future.”
Tesla hoped to reopen the California factory, which is only in the United States, in early May, but local authorities prevented it.
Musk highlighted the company’s experience in China, where electric car production resumed after the country’s Covid-19 epidemic was brought under control.
Threats to sue
“Tesla knows much more about what to do to be safe through our experience at the Tesla China factory than an interim (unelected) interim official,” he tweeted, referring to a local health official.
The irascible and outspoken billionaire, who announced the birth of a son with musician Grimes earlier this week, threatened to sue “immediately” the Alameda county where the plant is located, accusing his authorities of being “irrational and distant from reality”.
His health official, he said, had acted against “the Governor, the President, our constitutional freedoms, and simply common sense.”
Musk made headlines just over a week ago with a different Twitter protest stating that Tesla’s shares were overvalued, causing the electric car maker’s shares to drop more than 10%.
Several days earlier, he delivered an outrageous tirade during a profit call in which he called the coronavirus restrictions “fascist.”
Tesla managed to post a modest but surprising profit of $ 16 million in the first quarter, a 33% increase in auto deliveries and turnover that increased 32% to $ 5.99 billion.
