The young tactician has reflected on an incident that saw him hit Amakhosi players and coach Middendorp

Former interim coach for the Orlando Pirates, Rhulani Mokwena, admitted that he allowed his emotions to overcome him after the confrontation with Kaizer Chiefs.

The 35-year-old tactician criticized the Chiefs ‘players after the Buccaneers’ 3-2 loss to arch-rivals in a gripping PSL game last November.

There was a big dispute towards the end of the game and Amakhosi’s defender Erick Mathoho was sent off for an off-ball incident with Pirates defender Abel Mabaso.

This infuriated Mokwena, who beat up her Middendorp Chiefs counterpart and her players during her post-match reaction.

Former assistant coach to Mamelodi Sundowns has since reflected on the incident when he spoke on Marawa TV.

“There is power in emotional intelligence or being able to remain calm in the public domain,” Mokwena said.

“For example, in the game against Chiefs where we lost 3-2 for a penalty that shouldn’t have been a penalty.”

It was the Pirates’ second successive loss to the Chiefs this season under Mokwena, who regrets how he reacted after the titanic encounter.

“The [Willard] Katsande tackle, I called it a bully behavior and I’m never going to live that down. It’s a moment when I look back and laugh and say ‘Is it me?’ “He questioned.

“These are some of the moments when you remember and say they could have handled it better … with a little more emotional control.”

Mokwena was relieved of his duties as interim head coach the following month with inconsistent Buccaneers in the league.

Former academy coach Sundowns was replaced by experienced German coach Josef Zinnbauer and was named assistant coach to the Pirates.

However, Mokwena went on vacation after Zinnbauer took over the Bucs’ training reins.

The Orlando-born mentor reappeared at Chippa United as the new coach who replaced Norman Mapeza last March.

It is loaned in Chilli Boys from Pirates until the end of June 2020.
