Durban: A Bellair resident has expressed his gratitude to Metro Police officers after he was rescued after a dire 19-hour kidnapping experience last month.

The 36-year-old man was allegedly kidnapped on April 28 at 3 a.m. by masked robbers. He was taken to a place in Inanda where he was assaulted while the kidnappers demanded ransom amounts from his family and friends.

The man is alleged to have been held in a dark room where he was forced to call family and friends to ask for large amounts of money in exchange for his freedom. During this time, he was repeatedly handcuffed and beaten.

His family opened a kidnapping case at the Ntuzuma Police Station. However, it was the intervention of Metro Police officers who worked together with his family to arrest an assailant during a rescue exchange.

“During the test, the kidnappers discussed among themselves whether to release or kill me for parts of the body. I didn’t know if I was going to live or die. At the time that the Metro Police officers rescued me, I was very grateful. My sincere thanks to these officers and to the management of the Metro Police, as well as to the Municipality. You are the best and I am moved beyond words to express my gratitude to every officer who was involved, ”he said.

He will deliver a cake stamped with the Metro Police logo to the officers involved to express his sincere thanks.

“It is not much, but I want to show the officers how grateful I am,” he added.

Chief of the Metro Police Unit, Commissioner Steve Middleton praised the dedication of the officers involved.

“It is truly an honor to have members of this professional caliber and I have conveyed the sincere thanks and words of the victim that he has shared with the officers involved,” Middleton said.

The Metro Police officers involved in the rescue were from the Rapid Response Unit, the Highway Patrol Unit and members of the Albert Park suburbs.
