Johannesburg: South African confirmed cases of Covid-19 increased to 3,034 and two new deaths brought the total to 52, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize announced Saturday.
This means an increase of 251 new cases from the 2 783 confirmed coronavirus cases on Friday. Saturday’s 251 new cases mean it is the highest single-day increase South Africa has had since its first confirmed case on March 5. On Friday, confirmed infections had increased by 178 new cases and with two reported deaths, South Africa saw the highest number of deaths in a single day
Gauteng has 1,001 infections, followed by the Western Cape with 836 cases, KwaZulu-Natal with more than 600 cases, and the Eastern Cape rapidly approaching 300 cases.
In terms of deaths, KZN has the most deaths, over 20, followed by the Western Cape.
South Africa is currently on its 23rd day of closure after President Cyril Ramaphosa announced a two-week extension last week.
The closure is expected to end in late April, but Ramaphosa could extend it further if its advisory team deems it necessary.
