WHAT WE THINK
Is it just me or does the title of this series make it sound like a How to escape murder cleave? That’s probably why I wanted to see it the moment I saw it.
The four-part series looks at two drug laboratory chemists, Sonja Farak and Annie Dookhan, from different parts of Massachusetts (USA), who were involved in massive scandals that would eventually see thousands of cases in which they worked engaged and discarded Court.
A large part of the documentary focuses on the case of Sonja, who, it was discovered, was addicted to drugs and would steal evidence from the laboratory to maintain her habit. Annie, on the other hand, was accused of falsifying evidence.
We got to see a lot of how Sonja’s case was handled within court, which was extremely fascinating. There were scandals, cover-ups, and other things that we only see in fictional dramas.
Unfortunately, we couldn’t do the same trip with Annie’s case, which was a disappointment. It would have been interesting to see the challenges lawyers faced while seeking justice here.
Actually, that’s what the program boils down to: the challenges facing defense attorneys seeking justice for their clients who were affected by the bad actions of both chemicals.
I always say that a good documentary should entertain or educate you. And sometimes when you’re lucky you get both (looking at you, Tiger king) With this one, it was the last. It was a revelation.
This is what I learned:
First, he had no idea how drug cases were handled in the US. USA After the arrests. It seems pretty obvious now that a substance found in a suspect would have to be tested to prove that it is actually an illegal drug before a case can move forward, but it wasn’t something that really crossed my mind. Well now I know.
Second, the series gives you an insight into the life of a defense attorney and enables you to understand why many of them do what they do.
I have seen many criminal dramas depicting defense attorneys as the antagonist, the person who is trying to keep criminals on the street. Here, you can hear from these attorneys. You can see how difficult their jobs are and how much it costs to charge them.
But most importantly, with this show, you can see people like Luke Ryan who really care about their clients, who fight tirelessly to make sure justice is done.
It also shows us how important each part of the justice system is. All it takes is for a person to miss important evidence, or for a chemist to spoil a drug test, and a potentially innocent person could spend years behind bars.
