Nine more prison officials have tested positive for the coronavirus, the Department of Correctional Services confirmed Friday.
This brings the total number of confirmed cases in correctional facilities to 94, spokesman Singabakho Nxumalo said in a statement.
The Kutama Sinthumule Correctional Center, a private facility in Limpopo, has reported its first case, while the Warm Bokkeveld Prison in the Western Cape recorded four.
The East London and Worcester Correctional Centers each recorded two new cases.
Inmates
Nxumalo said the 27 inmates examined at the St Albans Correctional Center in Port Elizabeth, where an official was confirmed to have contracted the coronavirus this week, had tested negative.

A total of 29 officials in the Eastern Cape, seven in the Western Cape, one in Limpopo and one at the department’s headquarters in Tshwane tested positive.
Confirmed cases of Covid-19 at the East London Correctional Center remain at 56, with no new cases among inmates since Wednesday.
