The coronavirus is ten times more deadly than swine flu and the only way to stop it is with a vaccine, the World Health Organization has declared.
So far, Covid-19 has claimed the lives of nearly 115,000 people and has resulted in more than 1.8 million cases worldwide.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, said in a virtual briefing from Geneva that the organization was constantly learning about the mistake that is sweeping the world and that it is worse than the swine flu pandemic that spread worldwide in 2009.
He said: “We know that Covid-19 spreads rapidly, and we know that it is deadly, ten times more deadly than the 2009 flu pandemic.”
He added that some countries see cases doubling every three to four days, but they pledged to ‘find, test, isolate (and) treat each case and track every contact’ as soon as possible to combat the virus.

Tedros said that although Covid-19 had accelerated rapidly, it “decelerates much more slowly.”
More than half of the planet’s population is currently locked in the global fight to stop the spread of the coronavirus.
Tedros said: “Control measures can only be lifted if the correct public health measures are implemented, including a significant ability to trace contacts.”
The WHO acknowledged that, despite the current measures in place, it was “ultimately the development and delivery of a safe and effective vaccine will be necessary to completely interrupt transmission.”

A vaccine is said to be between one year and 18 months away.
So far, the coronavirus has killed 11,329 people in England and Wales, but the figure is expected to rise 15% to the east, as it does not include deaths in nursing homes.
According to WHO figures, coronavirus has currently killed 6.4 percent of people who tested positive, including 12 percent of Britons, 0.1 percent in Australia, and 4 percent. in the U.S.
But swine flu claimed the lives of just 1.1 percent of those who contracted it worldwide.

In the UK, the death rate was 0.03 percent, while it was 0.2 percent in the United States and 0.5 percent in Australia.
