School vacations can be thrown away to make up for lost time as Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga contemplates the best way to save the 2020 academic year.
This is one of the proposals that the department is considering.
Even before the shutdown began last month, Ramaphosa announced that schools would be closed to deal with the coronavirus outbreak. With the closure extended until the end of April, the schools will have been closed for more than six weeks.
Motshekga spokesman Elijah Mhlanga said the department is supporting the implementation of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s blockade to curb the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.
He said a team of experts was currently working on a plan on how the schools would be opened. The team will also determine when some or all of the schools will reopen once the closure is lifted.
“The 2020 academic year is possible and we will rescue it. We have a plan to make up for lost time. One of our plans could be to eliminate the next school vacation to make up for lost time,” said Mhlanga.
“Once all schools open, there is also a make-up plan to help our students make up for lost time.”
Mhlanga added that they have online educational radio and television programs that help students during the lockdown.
